Concrete · Madison, WI

Concrete flatwork with clean lines.

Sidewalks, aprons, pads, curbing, and approaches poured, finished, and jointed to hold up through Wisconsin winters.

Overview

Concrete in south central Wisconsin

Plenty of paving projects need concrete somewhere: a garage apron that takes turning loads, a dumpster pad that would rut asphalt, curbing that defines a lot edge, or sidewalks that have to meet code. Concrete in this climate lives or dies on three things: a base that drains, the right joint spacing so it cracks where you decided instead of where it wants to, and proper air entrainment in the mix so freeze and thaw does not spall the surface. We handle all three.

How we handle concrete

  2. Base preparationCompacted aggregate base so the slab is supported evenly.
  3. Forming and reinforcementForms set true, rebar or mesh placed where the load calls for it.
  4. Pour and finishAir-entrained mix placed, screeded, floated, and finished to the specified texture.
  5. Joint cuttingControl joints cut at the right depth and timing so cracking is controlled.
  6. CureCured properly and protected, with clear instructions on when to use it.

Questions

Concrete FAQs

Concrete or asphalt for my driveway?

Asphalt costs less up front, flexes better with frost movement, and is easier to repair. Concrete lasts longer, handles heavy static loads better, and stays lighter in color. Many properties do best with asphalt drive and a concrete apron. We will walk you through the tradeoff for your situation.

When can I drive on new concrete?

Foot traffic after about 24 to 48 hours, vehicles after seven days minimum. Full design strength takes 28 days. Keep deicing salt off it entirely the first winter.

Why does concrete crack?

All concrete cracks. The question is whether it cracks where you planned. Correct control joint spacing and depth means it cracks along those lines instead of randomly across the slab.
